Playing the Caterpillar games gives your child a chance to practice reading common words that they will come across often.

If your child lands on a word that they struggle to read, gently tell them the word. The more you play these games with your child, the easier it will become for them to recognise these common words on sight. When children can recognise these words quickly, they will be able to read more fluently. When they can spell them with ease, it frees them to try to write more unfamiliar words. Your child can focus on understanding what they read, instead of spending a lot of time trying to work out how to read or write these words.

As jou kind op ʼn woord land waarmee hy sukkel om te lees, kan jy geduldig vir hom die woord sê. Hoe meer jy hierdie speletjies met jou kind speel, hoe makliker sal dit vir hom raak om hierdie algemene woorde dadelik te herken. Wanneer kinders hierdie woorde vinnig kan herken, kan hulle vlotter lees. Wanneer hulle dit met gemak kan spel, gee dit hulle die kans om meer onbekende woorde te skryf. Jou kind kan fokus op begrip van wat hy lees, in plaas daarvan om baie tyd daaraan te bestee om te probeer om uit te werk hoe om hierdie woorde te lees of te skryf.
