Message 7

A child with a good vocabulary and the ability to explain what they think or see will build strong language skills. Strong language skills will help your child to become a good reader and writer. Find fun ways to talk about words that describe people, places and things.

Go outside with your child and look through the binoculars they have made. Talk about what your child can see through the binoculars. Ask questions that encourage them to talk about what they see, for example: “What do you see? What does it look like? What sound does it make? How would it feel if you could touch it? What is it used for? What is it doing?” Take a turn with the binoculars as well. Your child might enjoy being the one asking you the questions!

Umzekelo: Ubona ntoni? Ikhangeleka njani le nto uyibonayo? Sinjani isandi sayo? Ingaba ingavakala njani xa unokuyiphatha? Isetyenziselwa ntoni? Yenza ntoni? Kinders met ʼn goeie woordeskat en die vermoë om te verduidelik wat hulle dink of sien, sal sterk taalvaardighede ontwikkel. Sterk taalvaardighede sal jou kind help om ʼn goeie leser en skrywer te word. Vind prettige maniere om te gesels oor woorde wat mense, plekke en dinge beskryf.

Gaan saam met jou kind buitentoe en kyk deur die verkyker wat julle gemaak het. Gesels oor die dinge wat jou kind deur die verkyker sien. Vra vrae wat jou kind sal aanmoedig om die dinge te beskryf wat hy/sy sien. Byvoorbeeld: Wat sien jy? Hoe lyk dit? Watter klank maak dit? Hoe sal dit voel as jy daaraan raak? Waarvoor word dit gebruik? Wat doen dit? Jy kan ook ʼn beurt kry om deur die verkyker te kyk. Jou kind sal dit dalk geniet om die een te wees wat die vrae vra!
