Provide your child with many opportunities to draw and write. Let them watch you when you write during your daily activities. These could include shopping lists, birthday cards, messages to the teacher and even cell phone text messages.

After your child has drawn pictures of what they would like to buy at the market, ask them to talk about their pictures and then to write the word for each picture. Help your child by asking them to try to write the first sound of each word. If your child feels anxious, ask if you can write some of the words for them. Write their words as they speak, so that they can see each word being written down. Talking to your child about what they are writing will make them feel that what they have to say has value and is appreciated by you. This will grow their confidence to continue writing.

Vra jou kind om oor hul prente te gesels nadat hulle prente geteken het van dit wat hulle graag by die mark sal wil koop, en om dan die woord vir elke prent neer te skryf. Help jou kind deur hulle te vra om die eerste klank van elke woord te probeer skryf. As dit jou kind angstig maak om self te skryf, vra of jy van die woorde vir hulle kan skryf. Skryf hul woorde neer terwyl hulle praat, sodat hulle kan sien dat elke woord neergeskryf word. As jy met jou kind gesels oor dit wat hulle skryf, sal hulle voel dat dit wat hulle sê belangrik is en dat jy waarde heg daaraan. Dit sal hulle die selfvertroue gee om aan te hou skryf.
