A good way to help your child understand the value of a number is to let them use their fingers. Hold one finger up and say, “1”. Encourage your child to copy you. You can say, “Yes that’s 1 finger and this is 1 nose.” Your child can keep showing you 1 finger as they find the single objects in the picture story. You can say, “Now show me 2 fingers. Yes, those are 2 fingers and you have 2 legs.” Look at the picture and ask: “What are there 2 of in the picture? Let’s count it out on your fingers: 1, 2.”

’n Goeie manier om jou kind te help om die waarde van ’n getal te verstaan, is om jou kind te wys hoe om met hul vingers te tel. Hou een vinger in die lug en sê, “1”. Moedig jou kind aan om dit ook te doen en sê. Jy kan sê: “Ja, dit is 1 vinger en dit is 1 neus.” Jou kind kan aanhou om 1 vinger te wys terwyl hulle voorwerpe in die prentestorie soek waarvan daar net een is. Jy kan sê: “Wys nou vir my 2 vingers. Ja, dit is twee vingers en jy het 2 bene.” Kyk na die prent en vra: “Waarvan is daar 2 in die prent? Kom ons tel dit op jou vingers: 1, 2.”
